B.S.P.= Bassist, Songwriter, Poet
Son of Pearl’s latest musical offering entitled B.S.P. = Bassist, Songwriter, Poet, is the spoken word, new jazz Rhyme & Mellowism offering of the summer. Produced by Flight for FlightBoy Music and executively by Son of Pearl for Poor Robin’s Production, it’s the first vocalization of its kind for Son of Pearl since the “Comics Soul Trilogy.’ The Cosmic Soul Trilogy was mostly instrumental offerings, that gave birth to the term “mellowism” and such smooth jazz gems as “Profunkstakation, She Likes 2BOnTop, Red-Shirt-Blue Shoes and Y.C.F.M.C.T (You Can’t Fade me Come Time). The album is a collection of songs laced with R&B and blue-ism from the soulmine. It contains songs that were pinned and composed from the heart of the artist and the reality that love is the only truly lasting virtue that transcends the grave. The offering contains songs that reflex and release upon the travels of life, love and the lessons learned from living. Each song paints a portrait of a moment in life that we all share sooner or later. The cd opens with a melodic bass melody entitled Mellowistic Flight- “The Nod-Factor” (Bass Check) ends the cd with the opposite side of the bass with fire funk where Son of Pearl entices the listener to let the music move ya’ around particularly your head as in to nod with the 808 and his four-string bass, that’s all that he’s after. ” The cd continues with the realization that some songs can be appreciated and other song you can only pay homage to as in the Son of Pearl’s rendition of the Spinners hit I’ll Be Around”. Saturday Nite (Feenin 4 U) which is a flavored ode to late night fulfillment and longing for a lover that might be in mind’s reach but yet so far away in passionate terms. The only ballad” You Need a King (King Intense Nice Guy) brings the cd down to a blue light in the basement moment where chivalry is never dead with a southern gentleman.. The first offering of spoken word is called “3:46 A.M”. The song challenges the listener to think and to view what is really the importance of addressing a major issue. As the cd continues to showcase the ability of the bassist, songwriter, and poet he returns with BlakLuvFlava a kiss of praise to loving a woman. Huh-Huh (I’ll Be There 4-U) is a song that hints of the “I kind of told ya so” vibe when a lover finds that the love is never greener on the other side if love has a color anyway “The Heavy-D (R.I.P.) inspired 4th of Neveruary gives the promise of no matter what baby there is no need to rush I‘ll be around for you until the 4th of Neveruary (must be strong to add another month to the calendar). Each time the blue lights in the basement are not totally off the dance floor lights up like an old school juke joint, the following tune GotWhaChaNeed lets the groove re-wakening with a George Benson-ish guitar riff and the 808 drop for the old school dance movers. After a long day of work what woman does not want to be pampering a “lil bit”. As the cd moves back into a more serious tone the 2nd offering of spoken word “I.Y.K.M” leads to the path past the blue lights in the basement to the Red Light Special. Featuring the vocals of Bonnie Bonita the song leads off with “tell me your sins for your sins are who you really are” and the rest will follow suit when you listen to the song. Falloff picks up the tempo once again and dives into the psyche of what love could be if you just free fall and fall off into the object of your desires. A.A.E. allows the listener to seek the favor of love in seeking redemption in understanding that usually when a woman is right, she is usually right. As the musical adventure moves to a close nothing is possible without the reality that blessings are to be understood and appreciated and for there is nothing without the praise of the creator “God Can Work It Out” gives hopes to all that believe. As the cd close out the music takes flight to another plateau with Mellowist Flight. The out-tro just like the intro ends with Son of Pearl bass playing bring to the forefront that he is what he said that he is a bassist, songwriter, and bassist, so enjoy. Jerome Burgundy
