No Genre

BOYNEXTDOOR (SUNGHO, RIWOO, JAEHYUN, TAESAN, LEEHAN, and WOONHAK) are set to release their 4th EP, No Genre, on May 13.

The sextet’s previous EP, 19.99, ranked No. 40 on the Billboard 200 and was highlighted by Billboard as one of the Best K-pop Albums of 2024. Their digital single “IF I SAY, I LOVE YOU” ranked No. 99 on the Billboard Global Excl. US and No. 188 on the Billboard Global 200, proving their continued uphill trajectory in the global music scene. Now, K-pop’s free spirits are ready to take flight once again with No Genre.

The word “genre” defines artistic categories like music and film, but it can also act as a limitation—an invisible boundary that confines creativity and potential. With No Genre, BOYNEXTDOOR are setting out to reject those boundaries, declaring their intent to make the music they want, without labels or limits.

No Genre: Limitless Possibilities

BOYNEXTDOOR’s No Genre is a bold declaration of self—an assertion that their identity holds firm no matter the circumstance. That inner confidence fuels their sense of freedom, giving them the power to push any boundaries. For them, youth isn’t about fitting into a mold—it’s about breaking out of it. It’s this defiant nature, paired with their musical versatility, that makes their free-spirited charm even more magnetic in this release.

Refusing to be confined by structure or expectation, the members took the lead in shaping the sound and lyrics of the album, infusing the band’s unique characteristics, strengths, and talents into every note. JAEHYUN, TAESAN, and WOONHAK are credited on the album, once again boasting their self-producing prowess, while directly translating everyday experiences into songs, resulting in tracks that feel relatable and distinctly BOYNEXTDOOR. No Genre is a reflection of who they are: your friendly boys next door, easy to connect with, impossible to categorize.

The multifaceted all-rounders also explore the many shades of love, taking listeners on an emotional journey from longing to loss. It begins with the ache of missing a past lover in “123-78,” drifts into quiet reflection with the change of seasons in “Step By Step,” and stumbles into playful jealousy in “Is That True?” As the story unfolds, they reach the edge of heartbreak in “Next Mistake,” and finally confront the pain of goodbye in the bittersweet “IF I SAY, I LOVE YOU.”

Amid this progression, the lead single “I Feel Good” stands apart. While the other tracks trace the ups and downs of love, “I Feel Good” delivers a powerful statement that echoes the core message of No Genre: BOYNEXTDOOR won’t be confined by expectations or labels. It’s a bold expression of their confidence and desire to define their sound on their own terms, capturing the essence of K-pop’s free spirits—carefree, laid-back, with an edge.

A Bold, Free-Spirited Anthem: “I Feel Good”

BOYNEXTDOOR channels their determination to break free from the mold and take creative ownership in the lead single, “I Feel Good.” The lyrics—like “Meaning? Theme? Who needs stuff like that?” and “Follow me, do it just like this / Live for today / Like there’s no tomorrow”—deliver a thrilling rush with their unapologetic, straight-to-the-point attitude. It’s a bold expression of freedom, confidence, and self-assurance—everything No Genre stands for.

The performance for “I Feel Good” bursts with dynamic, unrestrained energy. Infused with playful “rockstar” elements, the choreography brings a fast-paced, funky vibe to life that captures the band’s effortless confidence, charisma, and energy. From mimicking holding mic stands in pairs to air-guitar moments, every move adds to the visual flair. One standout highlight is the choreography nod to Michael Jackson’s iconic “Billie Jean” performance, adding a layer of nostalgic cool. The stage is brought to life with multidimensional formations and tight teamwork, making each moment visually striking. BOYNEXTDOOR’s ability to turn the stage into their personal playground pairs perfectly with the track’s upbeat rhythm, creating a performance that’s as fun to watch as it is to hear.

The music video for “I Feel Good” captures the group’s free-spirited charm in full swing. Dancing and singing wherever they please—whether in a general store, an abandoned factory, a bus, or out on the street—they radiate the very essence of No Genre. The bold camera work, playful transitions, and clever visual effects add an extra layer of excitement, making the video a celebration of freedom, spontaneity, and pure musical joy.
